Summer 2010

Dear Friends,

The past academic year has been a busy one for Abbeystrewry N.S.   Last September we welcomed six new junior infants and the return of Mrs Benn from career break. October saw the harvest thanksgiving and our school book fair, November and December appeared to be somewhat of a daze with all minds directed towards our very successful Christmas play, 'Nativity Nightmares'.

2010 welcomed snowfall, days off and challenging weather with great enjoyment for adults and children alike! February, March and April; saw our Board of Management really knuckle down to plan the future direction of our school. We set about designing plans for two new classrooms, improving our school playground and advertising for a new teacher making Abbeystrewry N.S. a four teacher school.

May opened with us achieving Green Flag status, while continued hard work went on in the school garden, where lovely fresh carrots, strawberries, peas and wild flowers were to be enjoyed by everyone. June included trips to Glen Ilen farm, taking in one of the Drimoleague walks and a trip to Bunratty Castle and Thomond Park and a successful school sports.

With July approaching our sights are now set on beach days, playing in our own gardens, holidays and meeting old friends; but major work  will be going on the school. No one swallow makes a summer and well no one person makes a good school. It includes everyone, children, parents, teachers, staff and Board of Management. Well done everyone and thank you for all your commitment, looking forward to fruitful and exciting year.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy holidays.

Principal of Abbeystrewry National School

Re-dedication of Sacred Heart Church, Rath

On Saturday 19th June, Rose and I were honoured to be invited to the re-dedication of Rath Church as representatives of the parishioners of St. Matthew’s Church, Baltimore. This was in recognition of their use of St. Matthew’s for weekday services throughout the winter while their own Church in Rath underwent extensive renovations and enlargement.

The improvements are spectacular with beautifully designed new chancel incorporating a new marble altar, flooring and furniture in a contemporary idiom. The overall effect is the provision of a very worshipful and uplifting space. In addition, at the East end of the Church a meeting room and other facilities have been constructed.

Quite unexpectedly in the course of the service, I was invited to accept a Presentation of a Processional Cross for Abbeystrewry and an altar Cross for St. Matthew’s both exquisitively carved in ash based on Celtic design. These were carved and designed by parishioners Mike Coleman and his son Benedict , and were presented in appreciation of our offering St. Matthew’s for worship while their church was closed. The St. Matthew’s Cross is engraved with the caption “In thanksgiving from Rath and the Islands Parish”.

In accepting this gift on behalf of our parish I expressed our delight in being able to offer the hand of fellowship to their parishioners and that as it was written in verses of the Epistle of Paul to the Galations which had been read during the service, ‘We are all one in Christ’.

Cabery Show

As Abbeystrewry National School is expanding the necessity of fundraising becomes ever more important. In this regard the school are running a stall at the Carbery Show on Thursday 22nd of July. It takes a great number of cakes and tray bakes to keep the crowds happy, so hopefully everyone will find some time to do some

baking to support the school. All produce can be dropped into

Drinagh Spar in Skibbereen on the Wednesday 21st July, to be

packaged. If you would like any further information please contact: Narelle Jennings 33770 or Ann Beare 34863.

Perry O’Donovan

Perry O’Donovan has been working on the Community Employment Scheme looking after the Parochial Hall and the grounds around Abbeystrewry Church for the past two years. As it is now time for Perry to move on to pastures new the parish has recently advertised the vacant post.

Perry has had an article on the psychologist and philosopher William James (brother of novelist Henry James) who died on 26 August 1910 accepted by the Irish Times for the Irishman's Diary.

Perry says “The James family was originally Irish: the grandfather came from County Cavan and made his fortune working land-deals relating to the construction of the Erie Canal in up-state New York (he [the grandfather] started off as a shop assistant in a dry goods store and ended up as 'Albany's first millionaire'). People don't know William James so much any more--especially in Europe the 'father' of psychology is believed to be Sigsmund Freud--but

William James's work is very much part of the fabric of how we think and talk about ourselves: ‘The divided self’, ‘stream of consciousness’, ‘the religious experience’, ‘self-esteem’, ‘the sick soul’, the ‘will to believe’, all of these ideas and expressions originate in James’s pioneering work.

We all wish Perry continued success with his writing and thank him for his contribution to parish life.

Who so neglects a thing which he suspects he ought to do, because it seems to him too small a thing, is deceiving himself; it is not too

little, but too great for him, that he doeth it not.                                       Edward B. Pusey (1800 - 1882)

Summer Clergy

To assist with the busy summer schedule clergy are invited to come and stay in Tullagh Lodge beside Baltimore Church. In the course of their break they usually will take two services on a Sunday to assist the Rector. During June we welcomed Canon Dermot Jameson, former incumbent of Kilbroney, Rev Bill Johnston who most recently was rector of Mtubatuba, Diocese of Zululand and Canon Jim Sims former rector of Warrenpoint, now assisting in Hollywood, Co Down. During July and August we look forward to some familiar faces returning such as Rev Ian Coulter from Kilkenny and George Ladd from Wales. Dirk van Leeuwen comes from Brussels, Roger Hill, Mary Bowden, and Brian McAvoy are all from England, however Brian McAvoy was a curate in St Luke’s and St Ann’s in Cork city and later rector of Timoleague.

Thank you to the team who keep the Lodge so clean and welcoming for the visitors.

Cannon McClure's Churchwood Cure

A few weeks ago you may have noticed a pleasant polished churchwood smell in the Abbeystrewry church. This was the

result of applying Cannon McClure's Churchwood Cure to all the church woodwork, for which thanks are due to Jackie and Irene Roycroft and Jerome and Elizabeth McCarthy. We are further indebted to Jackie and Irene for the reciepe for Cannon McClure's Cure, and for the information following:

1 part Linseed Oil

1 part vinegar (best)

1 part pure turpentine

Quarter part methylated spirits

Shake mixture to keep in suspension. Apply to wood with a pad of cotton wool covered with a cloth (but not lint). Buff afterwards with a soft cloth. Use paint brush to apply to intricate woodwork on choir stalls and altar area. The mixture is applied every two years, in the springtime of the year.

The formula was given to Irene and Jackie by Mrs Faith Bantry White, wife of Rev. Robin Bantry White, Abbeystrewry rector in the 1980s, who in turn got it from Cannon McClure, a retired clergyman living near Lough Hyne. Cannon Hugh Norman McClure (1914-87) was a former cannon of St Anne's Cathedral, Belfast. He retired to West Cork living near Lough Hyne until his death in 1987; he is buried in the graveyard at Creagh.

Stewardship giving/Tax Rebates

As you all may know, those who give to the Church, and are treated as self-employed, can claim tax relief on any amount over E250.00 per year. Likewise, the Parish can claim tax relief on any giving over E250 by any PAYE earner, irrespective of the rate of tax that they pay. To this end, receipts are presently being forwarded to those who we believe to be classed as self-employed, so that they can claim their tax break. Similarly, claim forms are being forwarded to those who we believe to be PAYE earners, and we are asking these PAYE earners to sign and return the forms to the Parish Treasurer or Parish Recorder. If any person, who falls in to either of the afore-mentioned tax brackets, and who has given a minimum of E250.00 to the Church for the calendar year 2007, does not receive documentation, could they please, before 22nd July next, contact either their local Treasurer or Parish Recorder. In the event of any query regarding this scheme, please telephone the Parish Treasurer, Ronnie Tanner, at (028) 22193. Remember, in-action on this matter either costs the donor, or the Parish, money.
